- What is art? What kinds of things are 'works' of art, and how should we appreciate them? What are representation, expression, and formalism? How do we make aesthetic judgments? Why do there seem to be so few great women artists in the history of art? Is photography art? Music? Dance? These are just some of the many questions that will guide our intellectual pursuit to better understand the nature of art and the artworld.
What is philosophy? Can philosophy tell us how to live? What is knowledge, and how do we obtain it? What is the nature of the mind? These are the major questions we will be exploring this semester as we become acquainted with how philosophers past and present have sought to gain wisdom about the world. The focus will be on questions and possible answers about right and wrong, knowledge, and the mind.
