Qualitative inquiry is interpretive research with various philosophical orientations: ethnography, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, etc.Ethnography is the predominant orientation, which stems from an anthropological tradition in which the researcher collects data primarily through observation and interview. The assumptions, theories, and practice of qualitative research are introduced. Students design, conduct, and report a pilot study that demonstrates their observational and interviewing skills.
